Night photography
No tripod, mixed colour temperatures, moving crowds and very little light. All four of those are solvable and one of them is an opportunity.

Starting settings
Handheld, aperture priority, wide open, ISO on auto with a ceiling you have actually tested, and a minimum shutter speed set to about 1/60 for static subjects or 1/160 if people are moving through the frame. Then adjust.
Do not be precious about ISO. A clean photograph you did not take is worth less than a noisy one you did, and noise reduction has got very good.
Continuous autofocus with face detection earns its keep here more than anywhere else — you are shooting moving people in low light through gaps in a crowd.
Blue hour
The twenty to thirty minutes after sunset are the best light of the day and the only time the sky and the pandal lighting are within a few stops of each other. Plan to be at the puja you most want *before* sunset, not after it.
After that the sky goes black and every frame becomes lit shapes on nothing. Which is fine, but it is a different photograph and you get all night to take it.
Using the motion
A slow shutter — a quarter of a second, braced against a pole — turns the crowd into a river around a static pandal, and that is a far better description of Ashtami night than a frozen frame is.
Pan with a dhaki, or with a dhunuchi dancer, and let the smoke blur. The smoke is the picture; the dancer just has to be sharp enough.
Practicalities
Spare battery — cold is not the issue here, but a full night of live view and chimping is. Lens cloth, because the humidity condenses on glass when you step from a fan-cooled pandal into the street.
And keep one hand free. Whatever you are carrying, you will need a hand at some point in the crowd.
