Pandal hopping after midnight
From about one in the morning the queues collapse and the lights stay on. The only hard problem is getting home.

Why it works
The crowd peaks somewhere around nine or ten and drains slowly after midnight. By one in the morning the big pujas that had a ninety-minute queue at ten will let you walk straight in, and the lighting installations are still running.
The city stays awake with you. Tea stalls, egg roll counters and whole markets keep going until three or four during the five days, and the streets are busy rather than empty.
Getting home
This is the thing to solve first, not last. The Metro runs extended hours during Puja — often very late on the peak nights — but the last train is a published time and not a suggestion, and it is announced each year rather than being the same every year. Check it on the day.
App cabs surge hard and, more importantly, decline trips into crowded areas. A pre-booked car, a friend with a two-wheeler, or planning to walk back to a main road are all more reliable than opening an app at 2:40am on Ashtami.
Sensible precautions
Go in a group if you can. Keep your phone charged — see the phone and battery guide — and tell somebody your rough route.
Stick to lit main roads between clusters rather than cutting through lanes you do not know. During Pujo the police presence on the main routes is heavy, which is exactly where you want to be at three in the morning.
What is still open
Pandals, in most neighbourhoods, right through. Tea and cigarette stalls all night. Roll and chow counters until two or three, and in the busier areas later than that. Sweet shops, no.
The lighting installations sometimes go off before the pandals close, which is worth knowing if the lights are the reason you went. If a puja's arch is the attraction, do that one before one in the morning.
Who does this
A lot of Kolkata, is the honest answer. Late-night pandal hopping is a recognised way of doing the festival, particularly among people who worked through the evening, and the streets after midnight are busy and cheerful rather than empty.
It is also the only time of the five days when the very well-known pujas are walkable. If there is one you have wanted to see properly and refused to queue two hours for, this is when to go.
