Where to stay during Pujo
The right question is not which hotel — it is which side of the city you want to wake up in.

Book early
Kolkata fills up for these five days. Hotels raise rates well in advance and the good mid-range places go first. Booking two or three months ahead is normal; booking two weeks ahead is expensive and limited.
Check the actual dates against the tithi calendar rather than assuming a weekend, and give yourself Chaturthi and Panchami as well — they are the best pandal days and the cheapest nights.
Which area
North Kolkata puts you inside the densest, most walkable concentration of pujas in the city, with the Metro running up the spine of it. It has the fewest hotels of the three options and the most character.
Central — Park Street, Esplanade, the New Market area — is the practical compromise: plenty of rooms, the Metro at hand, and both north and south reachable. It is where most visitors end up and it is a sound choice.
South — Ballygunge, Gariahat, Southern Avenue — puts you next to the southern clusters and a great many pujas, but the traffic around Gariahat during Pujo is its own weather system.
Salt Lake and the eastern hotels are comfortable, modern and a long way from old Kolkata. Fine if you have a car and are mostly seeing the eastern block pujas; a mistake if you wanted to walk the north.
The real criterion
Can you walk home? On Ashtami night, at one in the morning, with no cab willing to come and the Metro shut, the only thing that matters about your accommodation is whether you can reach it on foot from where you have been.
That argues strongly for staying inside or immediately next to the cluster you most want to see, and travelling out to the others by day.
