The six-in-the-morning shift
No queues, good light, and the rituals actually happening. If you only take one piece of advice about Pujo, take this one.

What it is like
Kolkata between six and nine in the morning during Pujo is a different city from the one at nine at night. The streets are being washed, the tea stalls are on, the dhak is going somewhere, and the pandals are open with nobody in them.
You walk in. That is the whole appeal. No barricade, no rope, no volunteer moving you along — you stand in front of the idol for as long as you like, and you can hear the priest.
What is happening at that hour
The morning worship, in almost every puja. On Saptami it is the Nabapatrika procession to the water before dawn. On Ashtami it is the pushpanjali sittings, which begin early and are the largest morning crowd of the five days. On Dashami it is baran and sindoor khela.
So early morning is not a compromise version of the evening — it is when the ritual life of the festival actually happens, and the evening is the part that is mostly lights.
Making it work
Start where you slept. The point of a morning is covering a neighbourhood on foot without transport, so pick the cluster you are nearest and walk it.
Take water and eat afterwards; the food stalls open later than you will. And go before nine — by ten the heat is up and the first coaches have arrived.
What is open at that hour
Pandals, mostly. Committees keep them open through the night in the peak days and the morning worship starts early, so by six you will find volunteers, a priest and a handful of people from the para.
Tea is available almost immediately and food is not. The telebhaja and roll stalls are an afternoon and evening business; the morning is chai, biscuits and whatever the sweet shops have put out.
Public transport starts early but not that early. The first Metro is usually around six, so a five-thirty start means walking or a cab, both of which are easy at that hour.
Combining it with the rest of the day
Do the morning shift and then stop. Trying to run six in the morning until midnight is how a five-day festival turns into a two-day one.
The pattern that works over several days is to alternate: morning one day, evening the next, and an afternoon off in between. You will see more, and you will still be able to walk on Navami.
